Tyler Rake is a fearless black-market mercenary haunted by the death of his young son and a failed marriage. He takes the most dangerous jobs not for the money but because the risk fills the void left by his personal losses. When an imprisoned Indian drug lord’s teenage son Ovi Mahajan is kidnapped by a rival Bangladeshi crime boss named Amir Asif and taken to the heavily militarized city of Dhaka, Rake is hired for the extraction.

Getting into Dhaka and finding Ovi proves to be the easy part. Getting out is a different story entirely. Asif has the entire city locked down — police, military, and criminal networks all answer to him. Every bridge is blocked, every road is watched, and a bounty is placed on Rake’s head that turns every desperate person in Dhaka into a potential enemy. From rooftop chases to car wrecks to knife fights in claustrophobic apartment hallways, Rake must fight through an entire city to deliver one boy to safety.

The film’s centerpiece is a breathtaking 12-minute sequence designed to look like a single unbroken take, following Rake through gunfights, hand-to-hand combat, a car chase, and a building siege without a visible cut. As the mission forces Rake to confront his own guilt and find a reason to survive, Extraction delivers raw, visceral action that established Chris Hemsworth as a credible action star beyond the Marvel universe.

Director: Sam Hargrave — a former stunt coordinator for Marvel Studios (including Avengers: Endgame), Hargrave brought his intimate knowledge of physical action to his feature directorial debut.

Behind the Scenes

Chris Hemsworth performed the vast majority of his own stunts. The famous “oner” sequence was actually composed of several long takes seamlessly stitched together through digital compositing. The film was produced by the Russo Brothers (directors of Avengers: Endgame) and based on the graphic novel Ciudad. It became one of Netflix’s most-watched original films upon release.
