Best Top Gear episodes: three specials for different kinds of adventure

The best Top Gear episode depends on whether you want an unfamiliar journey, a difficult vehicle challenge or the presenters’ changing relationship with their cars. These three specials are accessible starting points from the Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May era. The selection is editorial rather than a viewer-vote ranking.

Vietnam: the journey changes the format

The Vietnam Special is series 12, episode 8. The presenters travel by motorcycles, making their different levels of comfort part of the story. It is a useful first special when you want scenery, a sustained route and a challenge that changes the familiar car-centered dynamic. Search the special’s name as well as its episode number because platforms package long specials differently.

Bolivia: difficult terrain and improvised solutions

The Bolivia Special is series 14, episode 6. The used off-road vehicles and demanding route make mechanical problems central to the adventure. Choose it when you want the practical challenge to remain visible: breakdowns and repairs change what the presenters can attempt, rather than functioning only as pauses between scenic stops.

Africa: a longer shared expedition

The Africa Special spans series 19, episodes 6 and 7. Estate cars become the basis of an expedition looking for the source of the Nile. Its longer format gives the vehicles time to acquire distinct identities and lets small failures accumulate into larger jokes. Watch both parts in order; the second is not an unrelated destination episode.

Choose a starting point and check the edition

Start with Vietnam for an unusual format, Bolivia for off-road strain or Africa for an extended two-part journey. Edited broadcast versions may have different runtimes. The Grand Tour is a separate later program featuring the trio, so its specials should not be numbered as Top Gear episodes. Preview the tone if you are choosing for children; travel scenery does not remove adult humor or risky situations.
