The zombie from Hocus Pocus: Billy Butcherson explained

The zombie in Hocus Pocus is Billy Butcherson, played by Doug Jones. His stitched mouth, decaying costume and emergence from a grave initially make him look like another threat to the children. His actual relationship with the Sanderson sisters is much less cooperative.

Who Billy is

Billy belongs to the sisters’ seventeenth-century past. Winifred’s account of their relationship helps establish her possessiveness and the cruelty of her punishment. When she raises him from the dead, she expects an obedient servant, but Billy has his own grievance and ultimately helps the children rather than remaining loyal to her.

Why his mouth is sewn shut

The stitches visually express Winifred’s effort to silence and control him. His ability to break that silence supplies one of the film’s comic reversals: the supposedly terrifying zombie can speak for himself, and his opinion of Winifred differs sharply from the story she tells about him.

Billy in Hocus Pocus 2

Doug Jones returns in the 2022 sequel. The later film revisits Billy’s history and lets him challenge the romantic version of events surrounding Winifred. Watch the original first to understand the graveyard introduction and the payoff of his return. Disney’s official sequel coverage specifically identifies him as a benevolent zombie, an apt distinction from the film’s witches.
