FernGully characters: Crysta, Zak, Batty and Hexxus

FernGully: The Last Rainforest follows the fairy Crysta and the human Zak through a forest threatened by logging and pollution. The 1992 animated film contrasts characters who understand the forest as a living community with those who initially see it as a resource or a place outside their responsibility.

Crysta, Zak and Pips

Samantha Mathis voices Crysta, whose curiosity brings her into contact with Zak, voiced by Jonathan Ward. Accidentally reduced to fairy size, Zak experiences the forest from a new perspective. Christian Slater voices Pips, whose closeness to Crysta makes the arrival of a human both a personal challenge and a reason to question whether he can be trusted.

Batty Koda and Magi

Robin Williams voices Batty Koda, the bat whose comic behavior also reflects the harm done to him through human experimentation. Grace Zabriskie voices Magi, the older fairy who teaches Crysta about the forest’s life and power. The two characters supply different forms of knowledge: one carries an injury from the outside world, while the other preserves the community’s understanding of itself.

Hexxus and the environmental conflict

Tim Curry voices Hexxus, the destructive force associated with pollution. The character gives an abstract threat a shape and a voice, while Zak’s choices keep human responsibility inside the story rather than assigning every problem to a magical villain. FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue is a later sequel with a different adventure, so specify the original film when looking for these voice performances.
