Halloweentown’s pumpkin: the movie symbol and St. Helens display
The giant jack-o’-lantern in Halloweentown is one of the 1998 Disney film’s central visual symbols. It marks the town square and becomes part of the story’s magical struggle. A related seasonal pumpkin display in St. Helens, Oregon, celebrates the town’s connection to the filming.
What the pumpkin does in the film — spoilers
Marnie’s discovery of Halloweentown introduces a community where familiar Halloween figures are ordinary residents. The large pumpkin makes that identity visible in the square. During the climax, restoring the magical force associated with it becomes part of resisting Kalabar’s attack, turning a decorative landmark into a focal point for collective action.
St. Helens and the real seasonal event
The Spirit of Halloweentown event in St. Helens includes a pumpkin in the courthouse plaza. Its current attraction page calls the display Jack the Pumpkin and describes a photo opportunity. That present-day installation is a celebration of the screen location, not evidence that the film’s temporary set survives unchanged.
Movie reference or visit planning?
For a scene question, use the original Halloweentown rather than assuming the same pumpkin has an identical function in every sequel. For a visit, check the event organizer’s current dates, tickets and access information. Seasonal displays and photo arrangements can change; an old photograph does not guarantee year-round access or the same event layout.
