Jadzia Dax: the Trill science officer in Deep Space Nine
Jadzia Dax is the Trill science officer played by Terry Farrell in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She is both an individual person and the joined host of the Dax symbiont, whose previous lives give her memories and relationships stretching far beyond Jadzia’s own lifetime.
Jadzia and the Dax symbiont
A joined Trill is not simply an old personality wearing a new body. Jadzia retains her own character while carrying experiences from earlier hosts. Benjamin Sisko’s friendship with the previous host Curzon explains his affectionate familiarity with Dax, even though his colleague is now Jadzia. That combination allows the series to explore continuity without erasing change.
Key relationships and episodes
Dax’s friendship with Sisko anchors her place on the station. Rejoined explores the emotional force of a relationship inherited from previous hosts. Her romance with Worf brings her curiosity and confidence into contact with Klingon tradition; You Are Cordially Invited follows their wedding. These episodes reveal more than a list of scientific duties can.
What happens to Dax? — major spoilers
Jadzia dies at the end of the sixth season in Tears of the Prophets. The symbiont survives and is joined to Ezri, played by Nicole de Boer, in the final season. Ezri Dax is a different host and character, not Jadzia returning under another name. Begin with earlier seasons if you want these relationships to unfold without the ending revealed.
