Aquaman (2018)

Aquaman (2018) is a superhero adventure film. Arthur Curry, the son of a human father and an Atlantean mother, is drawn into a struggle over the underwater kingdom. His journey forces him to decide whether he can accept the responsibility attached to his heritage.

Cast and filmmakers

Directed by James Wan. The featured cast includes Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman.

Story, context and what to watch first

Jason Momoa plays Arthur, with Amber Heard as Mera and Patrick Wilson as Orm. This is the first solo Aquaman film, not Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Its underwater world-building and royal conflict make it a fantasy adventure as well as a superhero origin story.

Arthur, Mera and Orm

Arthur’s divided heritage puts the surface world and Atlantis on both sides of his identity. Mera accompanies his journey, while Orm’s position as Atlantean ruler makes the question of kingship more than a symbolic one. The film’s conflicts are rooted in family and political allegiance, with the underwater setting providing the scale of the adventure.
