Max’s ambitions and the adults around him
The school is the stage on which Max tries to define himself. Herman Blume and Rosemary Cross complicate that carefully constructed identity in different ways, while Max’s father provides another perspective on his aspirations. This is a self-contained comedy rather than a franchise installment. The central triangle offers a useful starting point for following its mixture of adolescent certainty and adult disappointment.
