The Tell-Tale Heart: Film Adaptations and Cast

A Tell-Tale Heart film search can lead to several different adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s story. The best-known animated version is Ted Parmelee’s 1953 UPA short narrated by James Mason. A separate British short was released in the same year, so the year alone does not identify the correct film.

The story behind the adaptations

Poe’s narrator insists on his own sanity while describing a murder and the growing conviction that a hidden heartbeat will expose it. The dramatic tension comes from the distance between the narrator’s explanation and the behavior he describes. Screen adaptations can communicate that unreliable perspective through narration, performance, sound or stylized images, which makes the chosen version important to the viewing experience.

The 1953 UPA animated short

Ted Parmelee directed the American animated adaptation, and James Mason supplies its narration. TCM describes its stylized design and first-person storytelling as an unusual use of studio animation for psychological horror. Mason is a voice performer here; a search for a live-action cast should not be applied to this animated short.

The separate 1953 British film

BFI Player’s 1953 rental listing identifies the British adaptation and explicitly distinguishes it from Parmelee’s film. It also points viewers toward Brian Desmond Hurst’s 1934 adaptation and a 2004 version. The BFI separately records the 1960 feature, another production with the same source title.

How to identify the version you want

Look for the director, animation or live-action format, narration credit and runtime together. “1953, James Mason, UPA” identifies the animated short; a BFI British 1953 listing identifies a different film. A trailer without those details may not be enough to select a cast list reliably.
