Mr Blobby: Noel’s House Party, the performer and the comic character

Mr Blobby is the pink, yellow-spotted television character introduced on Noel’s House Party in 1992. Originally performed by Barry Killerby, he combines a cheerful children’s-entertainment appearance with clumsy, destructive behavior. The contrast made him a recognizable figure in British television comedy.

How the original joke worked

The character was initially presented to celebrity guests as an established children’s television personality. The guest was expected to cooperate with an apparently routine recording while Blobby made the situation increasingly difficult. Once audiences knew the trick, the appeal shifted toward seeing how far his chaotic behavior could disrupt an ordinary activity.

Character, costume and performer

Blobby’s limited speech, exaggerated movements and fixed expression allow the physical performance to carry the comedy. The costume’s friendly colors promise harmless entertainment, while its size and lack of coordination create the opposite experience for people around him. Barry Killerby’s association with the original role is important, but the character’s later appearances should not all be assigned to him without checking their credits.

The song and television legacy

The self-titled Mr Blobby single became the UK Christmas number one in 1993, according to the Official Charts record. That success extended the television joke into music and merchandise. Clips, songs and later appearances are related parts of the character’s history; none should be mistaken for a feature film simply because a keyword planner labels the name as a screen work.
