Peg and Al Bundy: Married with Children’s central couple
Peggy and Al Bundy are the married couple at the center of Married… with Children. Katey Sagal plays Peggy and Ed O’Neill plays Al. Their relationship parodies idealized television households through frustration, insults, consumer appetites and a stubborn attachment that survives their arguments.
Peggy’s role in the family comedy
Peggy rejects the image of the tireless, self-sacrificing sitcom homemaker. Her exaggerated fashion, shopping and refusal to perform expected domestic duties make her a comic counterpoint to that convention. Sagal’s timing gives the character a confidence that often leaves Al’s complaints sounding as habitual as they are angry.
Al’s disappointments
Al works as a shoe salesman and repeatedly looks back to his high-school football achievements. The gap between that remembered glory and his present circumstances fuels his resentment. Peggy can puncture his self-image, but she also belongs to the familiar world he continues to choose.
Kelly, Bud and the show’s tone
Their children Kelly and Bud extend the family’s contests over money, attention and authority. The humor is deliberately abrasive and often sexual; the title’s family setting does not indicate children’s viewing. This is the original American series, while localized adaptations use different performers and sometimes different family names.
