Percy the Small Engine: Thomas’s friend, number 6 and versions

Percy is the small green engine numbered 6 in Thomas & Friends. He is one of Thomas’s closest friends and is strongly associated with the mail train. Percy the Small Engine is also the title of a Railway Series book, so the phrase can refer either to the character or a specific collection of stories.

Recognizing Percy

Percy’s green body, red lining and number 6 distinguish him from the blue number 1 Thomas. His compact saddle-tank shape is another useful clue in older model-series scenes. The small engine’s enthusiasm can lead him into mistakes, but his willingness to help gives him a dependable place among the engines on Sodor.

Friendship and the mail

Percy’s friendship with Thomas allows stories about trust, misunderstandings and making amends. Mail work gives him a responsibility whose importance is larger than the size of the engine doing it. His stories often turn an apparently modest task into an opportunity to show persistence or learn why listening to others matters.

Books, models and All Engines Go

The Railway Series, the original television production, later computer animation and All Engines Go do not use identical designs or continuity. A toy or image can therefore look different without depicting a different named engine. Check the production style and title when locating an episode. A book titled Percy the Small Engine is not simply a transcript of every television episode featuring him.
