The Sopranos family tree: Tony’s relatives and crime family

The Sopranos family tree is easier to follow when biological relatives, marriage connections and Mafia relationships are kept distinct. Tony Soprano belongs to a household and a criminal organization; the word family refers to both, but membership in one does not prove a blood relationship.

Tony’s immediate family

Tony is the son of Johnny Boy and Livia Soprano. Janice and Barbara are his sisters. Corrado Junior Soprano is Johnny Boy’s brother, making him Tony’s paternal uncle. Tony marries Carmela DeAngelis; their children are Meadow and Anthony Jr., usually called A.J. Carmela’s parents are Hugh and Mary DeAngelis.

Christopher and the extended connections

Christopher Moltisanti is Dickie Moltisanti’s son. Tony commonly calls Christopher his nephew, but this is not a simple father’s-brother relationship: Christopher is related to Carmela through the DeAngelis/Moltisanti branch. Tony Blundetto is Tony Soprano’s cousin through their mothers. These distinctions explain why a character’s form of address should not automatically become a line in a biological tree.

The DiMeo organization is a separate map

Silvio Dante and Paulie Gualtieri are members of Tony’s criminal circle, not his siblings. Boss, captain, soldier and associate describe roles in the organization. A useful crime-family chart tracks authority and allegiance; a family tree tracks parents, children, siblings and marriage. The Many Saints of Newark explores the earlier generation, especially Dickie and the young Tony, rather than replacing these relationships.
