City of Ghosts: the Ghost Club and Los Angeles stories
City of Ghosts is Elizabeth Ito’s 2021 animated children’s series about a Ghost Club exploring Los Angeles. Its friendly ghosts introduce the histories and communities of real neighborhoods through a blend of animation, real settings and documentary style interviews.
A different kind of ghost story
The children respond to strange sounds and mysterious encounters by listening. The goal is understanding a place and its residents rather than defeating a frightening monster. Zelda and the club allow local history to emerge through personal memories, giving the supernatural premise a gentle, curious tone.
Neighborhoods across the six episodes
The episodes visit Boyle Heights, Venice, Leimert Park, Tovaangar, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater and Koreatown. These are more than backgrounds: food, music, Indigenous history, skateboarding and performance connect the ghosts to the living city. The individual adventures work as short introductions to subjects families can discuss afterward.
Which City of Ghosts?
This guide covers the Netflix animated series, not the documentary film of the same name or another supernatural drama. Check the creator Elizabeth Ito and release year 2021 when comparing listings. Netflix identifies six episodes and provides individual episode summaries.
