Wacky Races characters: the original racers and their cars
The original Wacky Races pairs eccentric drivers with vehicles that express their personalities. Dick Dastardly and Muttley repeatedly try to cheat, while the other competitors turn each race into a sequence of visual jokes. The 1968 lineup is different from later revivals and reinterpretations.
The most recognizable competitors
Dick Dastardly and Muttley drive the Mean Machine, car 00. Penelope Pitstop drives the Compact Pussycat, car 5, and Peter Perfect drives the Turbo Terrific, car 9. The Ant Hill Mob squeeze into the Bulletproof Bomb, car 7. Their cars are effectively character introductions: a viewer can understand the comic idea before anyone explains it.
The rest of the original field
The Slag Brothers drive the Boulder Mobile (1); the Gruesome Twosome use the Creepy Coupe (2); Professor Pat Pending pilots the Convert-a-Car (3); the Red Max drives the Crimson Haybailer (4); Sergeant Blast and Private Meekly operate the Army Surplus Special (6); Luke and Blubber Bear ride the Arkansas Chuggabug (8); and Rufus Ruffcut with Sawtooth use the Buzzwagon (10).
Why Dastardly keeps losing time
Dastardly’s elaborate traps often require him to stop racing and wait for everyone else. The joke is structural: the attempt to secure an unfair advantage prevents him from using an advantage he already had. Muttley’s reactions underline the gap between the villain’s confidence and the actual result.
Original show and later versions
The 2017 series returns to some familiar names but changes the group and storytelling. The Perils of Penelope Pitstop is a separate spin-off rather than another season of the same races. Use the year and vehicle when identifying a character from an image.
