Where was Gunsmoke filmed? California ranches and Dodge City
Gunsmoke is set in and around Dodge City, Kansas, but much of its television production used California studios and movie ranches. Its long run involved multiple locations, so no single surviving western street represents every season or episode.
Melody Ranch in Newhall
Melody Ranch’s own studio history identifies Gunsmoke among the western productions filmed there. Its streets, boardwalks and buildings supplied a reusable frontier environment close to the production infrastructure of Los Angeles. A familiar facade can appear in several different screen towns when redressed and photographed from another angle.
Paramount Ranch and episode-specific evidence
The National Park Service lists Gunsmoke among productions connected to Paramount Ranch, identifying the episode Box O’ Rocks. That is useful evidence of a specific connection; it does not mean the entire series was made on that ranch. Claims about a particular scene should be checked against the episode rather than inferred from a general list of western productions.
Why the screen geography is difficult to map
A conversation on a town street, a room interior and a horseback journey may have been filmed in different places. Editing makes them feel continuous. Sets also changed over a series lasting decades, while later fires and rebuilding altered some ranch landscapes. For a visit, consult the current operator’s access information and distinguish an active production facility from a public park.
