Where was Supernatural filmed? Vancouver and the pilot exception
Supernatural was filmed mainly in British Columbia, Canada, with Vancouver and surrounding communities standing in for the Winchesters’ travels across the United States. The pilot is an important exception: its production took place in the Los Angeles area before the regular series settled in Canada.
Vancouver and the surrounding region
Burnaby, Coquitlam, New Westminster and other nearby communities supplied different looks within a practical production area. Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam appears in location records. Streets, wooded areas and institutional buildings could become different American destinations through signs, vehicles, camera angles and the story’s dialogue.
Why the same place can look unfamiliar
A location may play more than one role across fifteen seasons. A building seen at night, dressed with a different entrance sign or photographed from another side can feel like a new town. Studio interiors also connect outdoor locations that were never physically adjacent. The series’ road-trip geography is a fictional construction rather than a literal route between filming sites.
Finding one particular scene
Identify the season and episode first, then compare a production location record with the visible architecture. A general Vancouver tour list is useful for orientation but cannot establish every scene. Current access to hospitals, homes and working properties may differ from production access years earlier. Destination Vancouver’s film-location resources can help separate public sites from places that need permission.
