Project Hail Mary plot summary (spoilers)
Grace wakes alone aboard the Hail Mary with his memories missing and his crewmates dead. Returning memories reveal why he left Earth: Astrophage is consuming stellar energy, threatening the Sun and the people who depend on it. His mission is to find an answer in the Tau Ceti system.
He encounters another survivor, Rocky, an alien engineer whose civilization faces the same emergency. Their incompatible atmospheres require a physical barrier, but they gradually establish communication and work together. They discover an organism called Taumoeba that consumes Astrophage, then undertake a dangerous collection mission and develop a supply that could rescue both worlds. Rocky risks his life to save Grace during the work.
Grace also remembers that he did not willingly accept the mission: Eva Stratt had him drugged and sent after the planned team suffered a fatal accident. Later, after he and Rocky separate, he discovers that their Taumoeba containment has failed. Rocky’s ship faces the same problem, and Grace realizes his friend needs help. He sends the cure toward Earth in probes and changes course to rescue Rocky. Released-film plot and rescue sequence.
The ending: does Grace return to Earth?
Grace reaches Rocky, and the two survive on Erid. The Eridians construct a habitat where Grace can live and teach their children. The film also shows Stratt receiving news that the probes have arrived on a cold Earth, giving the rescue mission a concrete result beyond Grace’s own experience. The film’s added Earth scene and final sequence.
The final scenes do not show Grace flying home. Rocky says a return journey is possible, while Grace is living with his friend and teaching again. Choosing to rescue Rocky resolves Grace’s earlier reluctance: his final act of help is voluntary.
